First founded by Josef Heinrich Coppenrath in 1768, the publishing house was acquired by young graphic designer and publisher Wolfgang Hölker in 1977. Today, children’s and gift books are the backbone of this privately-owned company with a programme for the production of ambitious books of high visual quality that always have a special something to them. Coppenrath is ranked among the top ten German publishing houses.
“Die Spiegelburg” and its international equivalent “Spiegelburg International” was founded in 1992 and provides the structure for its innovative non-book programme. The Spiegelburg collection was created with the aim of combining books with other products in a fun and creative way, thereby seeing the introduction of Coppenrath book characters and themes as plush toys or printed on wrapping paper, chocolates, porcelain, puzzles, bags, suitcases, etc.
Coppenrath specialises in bath, foam and board books; picture books; activity books; children and young adult fiction; small fun and games books; children’s non-fiction; religious books for children; as well as producing, for children and adults, high-quality stationery, albums and diaries, Advent calendars. Coppenrath’s extensive gift book collection for adults focuses on creative and modern titles that say, ‘I’m thinking of you!’ — ranging from funny to inspiring, from voice-recorder books to hand-stitched books. In addition, the Hölker Verlag list publishes unique, visually-appealing and well-researched cookery and lifestyle books.
Children and young adult fiction have been a new focus since 2006, bringing successful and award-winning German and international authors to its list, such as Thomas Brezina, Michael Römling, Patricia Schröder, Malachy Doyle, Pierdomenico Baccalario and Do van Ranst.
Our most well-known character is the travelling stuffed rabbit named Felix. Published in over 29 languages and with over 7 million copies sold worldwide, children can also take fabulous adventures with Felix in DVDs, games and musicals. Felix has his own homepage and fan club (www.felixclub.de) and made his cinematic debut in 2004 with a sequel following shortly thereafter. He is also a cartoon character on his own television series.
Since 2004 our latest character and merchandising success has been a book character for young girls aged 4-8 named Princess Lillifee. She is a small fairy princess who lives in a flower castle. Her books have been translated in 25 languages and have sold over 1.7 million copies worldwide. Her character is a successful merchandising brand. The seventh title in the series, Princess Lillifee and the little Fawn, was just published. Princess Lillifee enjoyed a resounding success with over 1 million viewers following her animated film debut in spring 2009 (www.prinzessin-lillifee-derfilm.de).
The company also manages several other characters: the Friendly Seven and Nelli the Duck for infants, the little Moon Bear, also an animated character in film and television productions; Capt’n Sharky, a little pirate with a big heart; Rebella, our latest young adult character (www.rebella.de); and the terribly nice Rottentodd family.
In addition to characters, Coppenrath continuously introduces successful book and non-book collections based on themes. T-Rex World encompasses books and non-books dedicated to new dinosaur discoveries and educating children in a fun way. Horse Lovers is a successful collection of children’s fiction and non-fiction titles alongside strong-selling products with a unique design.
